EURO 2024 PLAY-OFF DRAW IN FULL: WALES TO HOST FINLAND IN SEMI-FINAL CLASH

Wales are having to go through the play-off route in a bid to qualify for Euro 2024 next summer

Action Images via Reuters

Wales will host Finland in a home semi-final in the Euro 2024 play-offs next year.

The match will take place at the Cardiff City Stadium on March 21, with the winners of the one-legged clash heading through to the final in Path A.

If Wales were to get past Finland, then Rob Page's side would also have crucial home advantage against either Poland or Estonia for a place at the tournament in Germany next summer.

Poland will entertain Estonia in their semi-final, while in Path B Ukraine have been handed a trip to face Bosnia and Herzegovina after being beaten to the runner-up spot behind England in qualifying Group C by Italy following a goalless draw in Leverkusen on Monday night.

Israel host Iceland, with the winners of that tie travelling to play either Bosnia and Herzegovina or Ukraine in the Path B final.

In Path C, Georgia are at home to Luxembourg, while 2004 winners Greece host Kazakhstan.

Georgia or Luxembourg will then have home advantage against either Greece or Kazakhstan in the final.

ENGLAND'S EURO 2024 POT AND POTENTIAL GROUP STAGE OPPONENTS

Despite a monotonous end to England's qualification campaign, the Three Lions confirmed their place at Euro 2024 with relative ease.

England sauntered to top spot in Group C, winning six of their eight qualification matches. That included back-to-back victories against European champions Italy, as well as a 7-0 thrashing of North Macedonia and comfortable wins against Ukraine and Malta.

However, England have always flattered to deceive at major tournaments. Qualification has normally been straightforward but they have too frequently choked on the big stage despite an abundance of talent.

With the Euro 2024 draw coming in December, let's look at who England could face in next summer's tournament.

What Euro 2024 pot are England in?

England's performances in Group C have been rewarded / Robin Jones/GettyImages

With Euro 2024 a tournament made up of 24 nations, the group stage consists of six groups of four teams. Each group is made up of a single team from each pot - one to four - with the strongest teams, hypothetically, in Pot 1.

England were one of the five qualification group winners to be drawn into Pot 1 based on their impressive record in qualifying. They will also be joined by hosts Germany in the top pot.

Pot 1 also consists of SpainBelgiumPortugal and France, meaning England won't face any of these teams in the Euro 2024 group stage.

Pots are decided based on the performance of teams in Euro 2024 qualifying.

STEPHEN KENNY LEAVES ROLE AS IRELAND MANAGER AFTER CONTRACT IS NOT RENEWED

Stephen Kenny’s contract as manager of the Republic of Ireland will not be renewed, the Football Association of Ireland has announced.

His departure comes following Ireland’s disappointing Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, where the team missed out on a spot in next year’s finals in Germany.

Their qualification run came to a close on Saturday after being beaten 1-0 by the Netherlands in Amsterdam and as a result finished fourth in the Group B standings having won only two of their eight games.

Kenny’s final game in charge saw Ireland draw 1-1 with New Zealand in a friendly in Dublin on Tuesday, with the FAI deciding that his contract would not be renewed following the conclusion of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

They added that “now is the right time for change” ahead of friendly matches taking place in March and June 2024 and confirmed that the recruitment process for a new head coach is now under way.

Speaking about the decision, FAI CEO Jonathan Hill said: “Over the period of his tenure, Stephen and his staff have worked tirelessly to create the right environment to support the development of our senior men’s team, and we are hugely grateful for that considerable contribution.

“Stephen has also overseen an important period of transition for our senior men’s national team and has given debuts to a significant number of new and younger players and this will serve as a solid platform for whoever now takes this group of players forward.”

FAI President Gerry McAnaney added: “The Board and all at the FAI would like to sincerely thank Stephen and his staff for their hard work, professionalism and unwavering dedication to the team, the fans, and to Irish football. We wish Stephen every success for the future.”

Kenny has been at the helm since 2020, replacing Mick McCarthy and has overseen plenty of changes within the squad, but only recorded six wins out of 29 competitive matches during his reign.

His contract expired following the New Zealand draw and admitted post-match he did not expect to continue as Ireland manager.

“Of course, it would be a dream to carry on and manage the team, of course it would, but my instinct is that’s not going to happen,” Kenny said.

“That’s my own instinct and the evidence suggests that probably won’t happen, so I respect that as well.”

WHEN IS EURO 2024 DRAW? DATE, START TIME, CONFIRMED POTS AND QUALIFIED TEAMS

Automatic Euro 2024 qualification now at an end as the draw for the finals now moves into view.

England are already in the hat despite a frustrating draw with North Macedonia that followed a dour win over Malta as Gareth Southgate looks to finalise his squad for next summer.

Germany will host the Euros and have therefore already qualified while giants such as France, Portugal and Spain have also booked their flights.

The Netherlands have also now qualified after beating the Republic of Ireland in Amsterdam. with Italy following after a goalless draw with Ukraine on Monday. Sweden and Norway are both out - meaning no major tournament again for Erling Haaland.

Romania are also qualified after their 2-1 comeback win over Israel on Saturday, so too Switzerland despite their draw with Kosovo. Croatia have also qualified.

Of the home nations, Scotland have made it but both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have failed to reach Euro 2024 via their qualification groups, while Wales will be relying on the play-offs after their draw with Turkey.

🇪🇺 CROATIA BEAT WALES TO EURO SPOT; GREECE STUN FRANCE; DUTCH HIT SIX

The final automatic qualification spot for Euro 2024 was up for grabs on Tuesday plus lots of other drama.

Here is what went down across Europe.

Croatia edge Armenia to qualify

Croatia - 01
Armenia - 0

Scorer: Budimir 43′
Croatia claimed the final automatic qualification spot after a slim win over Armenia at home.

Knowing what was on the line the hosts largely dominated the match but a compact visiting defence kept things deadlocked.

Despite six first-half efforts on target, it was Armenia who almost opened the scoring but goalkeeper Dominik Livaković made a vital save one-on-one.
Then the breakthrough moment arrived just before the half-time whistle when an unmarked Ante Budimir headed home Borna Sosa’s cross.

The second half continued to be a nervy affair and Croatia managed to hang on and secure second in their group above Wales.

ANTOINE GRIEZMANN TAKES AIM AT UEFA OVER ABSENCE OF GOAL-LINE TECHNOLOGY IN FRANCE QUALIFIER

Having battled to a draw against a determined Greek team in Athens, France have missed out on a full house of Euro 2024 qualifying victories.

After equalising through a long-range effort from Youssouf Fofana, Didier Deschamps men came within inches of clinching a late win, as Kingsley Coman broke through down the right and sent in a cross. The effort would deflect off Greek defender Zeca onto the post, before hitting the opposite upright as well. Replays would show that the ball appeared to cross the line on its way to other post, before swerving back into the field of play.

Speaking to TF1 in the aftermatch, vice-captain Antoine Griezmann – who was skipper for most of the evening in Kylian Mbappé’s absence – expressed his frustration at the absence of goal-line technology for the fixture. The midfielder goes as far as taking direct aim at UEFA, calling for the sport’s continental governing body to increase the use of technology in matches:

Goal-line technology is what was missing! UEFA has a lot of money and they can’t manage to put everything in place for us to know whether it’s a goal or not. We have to ask a bit more of UEFA – if they want us to be playing lots of games, we need to ask them for more technology.”

GERMANY REDUCED TO 10 MEN IN FRIENDLY HUMILIATION BY AUSTRIA

Germany’s Euro 2024 preparations were dealt another ignominy as they were humiliated in a friendly with Austria.

Austria - 02

Germany - 0

Scorers: Sabitzer 29′, Baumgartner 73

Sent off: Sané 49′

Marcel Sabitzer put the hosts ahead shortly before the half-hour mark by squeezing a shot past Kevin Trapp at his near post.

Things went from bad to worse for Die Mannschaft as they were reduced to 10 men when Leroy Sané was sent off for lashing out at Philipp Mwene.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side saw their misery compounded late on as Christoph Baumgartner raced clear and chipped a second for the hosts.

The result continues a less than perfect run for Germany, who have lost six of their 11 games throughout 2023 ahead of hosting the Euros.

Five top class Premier League players that won’t be at Euro 2024

Euro 2024 qualifying has almost wrapped up, with the vast majority of the spots filled for next summer’s tournament in Germany.

While the likes of England, France and Spain make their plans for next year, some big name players will be booking their holidays for the end of the season after their national teams couldn’t get the job done.

Here are some of the best Premier League players who we know will not be playing in the competition.

Five top Premier League players that won’t be at Euro 2024:

Erling Haaland – Norway

Even with the most lethal finisher in European football among their ranks, Norway could not qualify for the 24-team Euros. Having scored six goals during the campaign, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was among the top goalscorers in qualifying, but results simply weren’t good enough.

Norway were not handed a particularly difficult group, with Scotland among the lowest-ranked nations to come out of Pot 2; Spain, Georgia and Cyprus made up the rest of Group A.

But they won just three of their eight games, with defeat to the Scots in June proving crucial. A 1-1 draw in Georgia in March didn’t help their prospects either.

Erling Haaland expected to be fit for Liverpool clash

ENGLAND’S EURO 2024 SQUAD: WHO’S ON THE PLANE, WHO’S IN CONTENTION AND WHO HAS WORK TO DO?

England have qualified for Euro 2024 after finishing top of Group C in Uefa qualification and now look ahead to December’s draw.

After a draw with North Macedonia, there are now just two friendlies left until Gareth Southgate decides on his 23 players for Germany.

After a stylish 3-1 win over reigning champions Italy at Wembley Stadium, the Three Lions stumbled past Malta before a 1-1 draw in Skopje thanks to a controversial penalty.

England can look forward to glamour friendlies against Brazil and Belgium next March, but the fierce competition for places will mean form in the Premier League and around Europe will be crucial in the coming months.

Here is a closer look at who is heading to Germany and who might miss out.

Harry Kane

England’s captain remains their talisman on the pitch, both with his leadership and with his goals as he continues to add to his record tally. Kane has hit the ground running at Bayern Munich, and the 30-year-old has talked up the virtues of the Bundesliga’s winter break and playing one fewer domestic cup competition. Southgate will hope Kane is fit and fresh when the Euros come around.

Jude Bellingham

The 20-year-old has quickly elevated himself to be one of England’s essential players. He is consistently producing outstanding performances both for his country and his new club, Real Madrid, racking up goals and assists after driving runs from midfield. Southgate likes Bellingham as a No 10 off Kane, and this could be the start of a fruitful partnership between England’s current captain and his likely successor.

Declan Rice

Rice has made a good start to life at Arsenal, and his importance at international level has grown immeasurably over the past few years to the point where he is crucial to how England play.

John Stones

The Manchester City defender has been a stalwart for Southgate over the years, integral to deep runs at the 2018 World Cup and the last Euros. Only Kane and Harry Maguire have won more than Stones’ 56 caps since the manager took charge in 2016, and the lack of centre-back alternatives only strengthens his position in the squad.

Kyle Walker

Experience, recovery pace and ability to play on the right of a back three all make the Manchester City defender an essential part of Southgate’s plans.

Jordan Pickford

The Everton goalkeeper has been England’s No 1 for a long time and that position looks safe, particularly given the challenge Aaron Ramsdale now faces to keep his Arsenal place against competition from new arrival David Raya.

Bukayo Saka

Saka is a popular and trusted member of the current group who is becoming a senior player, with 11 goals in 30 appearances, despite being only 22. His versatility down both the left and right flank, and ability to play as an attacking wing-back, is handy for a manager who likes to chop and change systems.

Phil Foden

Foden is often still talked about in terms of potential, but he will be 24 when the Euros come around and is becoming increasingly essential to Pep Guardiola’s City team. His velcro control is unique in the England squad and Southgate’s only conundrum is how to fit his best attacking talents into the same team.

Marcus Rashford

The Manchester United forward is the third highest goalscorer of the Southgate era, with 15, behind only Kane and Raheem Sterling. His pace and direct runs towards goal from the left wing complement Kane’s preference to drop deep and link play, and he can also offer an option as a No 9 should it be needed.

Jack Grealish

The City winger took time earning Southgate’s trust but, at 28 and with a treble on his CV, is now a regular squad member. The only question is whether the manager sees him as an important part of the first XI or a game-changing finisher off the bench.

Kieran Trippier

One of Southgate’s favourites, Trippier is a certainty to be part of the squad for his experience, versatility to play full-back on both sides and his set-piece delivery. He may find himself on the bench when England play a back four, but tends to start at wing-back when Walker joins the back three.

Nearly there

Harry Maguire

The Manchester United defender is one of Southgate’s most trusted players and he was given another vote of confidence with a start against Italy in Euro 2024 qualifying. But a lack of playing time for his club will bring scepticism from fans and the media as the tournament nears.

Aaron Ramsdale

The goalkeeper is battling for a starting place at Arsenal with David Raya, but Mikel Arteta’s messaging suggests that the Spaniard has arrived to share rather than steal the gloves, and so long as Ramsdale continues to play and play well, he will be on the plane.

Luke Shaw

When fit, Shaw is the preferred left-back in this England team, bringing attacking threat on the overlap as well as long-standing relationships with both Maguire and Rashford at Manchester United. He has been out with a leg injury since mid-August and will need to reestablish himself amid competition from Ben Chilwell and Trippier.

Kalvin Phillips

Like Maguire at United, Phillips is a firm favourite with the manager but there is a growing issue around his lack of game time for Manchester City. Phillips has admitted he might need to make a decision over his future, but he remains a leading option in a shallow pool of central midfielders and now has plenty of major tournament experience.

James Maddison

The midfielder struggled with an injury at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which prevented him from making an appearance, but his early-season form for Tottenham has demanded a place in recent squads and Maddison is poised to travel as deputy to Bellingham in the No 10 role.

Ben Chilwell

The Chelsea left-back didn’t play a single minute at the last Euros and watched on as Shaw (and occasionally Trippier) filled that spot. He has been sidelined with a hamstring injury this season but a fit and firing Chilwell should be on the plane.

Jordan Henderson

The midfielder was booed by England fans in recent internationals at Wembley following his move to the Saudi Pro League, but that only seemed to strengthen Southgate’s loyalties to the player. The manager values Henderson’s professionalism, experience and leadership in a youthful squad.

Raheem Sterling

Southgate has talked up Sterling’s chances of figuring in his plans to the media, but the Chelsea winger has not been involved in recent camps and faces a fight against Rashford and Grealish, among others, to figure on the left side of England’s attack.

Sam Johnstone

The Crystal Palace goalkeeper has overtaken Nick Pope in the running to be England’s third-choice goalkeeper and played well in a recent friendly with Australia.

Lewis Dunk

Brighton’s captain had to wait five years for his second international cap but has done well with the opportunities presented to him in recent months. Dunk’s aerial dominance and ball-playing ability, honed at Brighton under Roberto De Zerbi, are valuable traits at centre-half, one of England’s most uncertain positions.

Reece James

The full-back is one of the best in the world when fully fit but his lack of reliability is a concern, particularly with the smaller 23-player squad this time around. What’s more, James is fighting for a place against a competitive field of Walker, Trippier and Alexander-Arnold.

Marc Guehi

The Palace defender is highly rated by the England coaching team and, at 23, could be a future cornerstone of the back line. Centre-back is a position that’s up for grabs at Euro 2024 and Guehi has a real chance.

Conor Gallagher

Gallagher has been bright and energetic in his cluster of England caps and is clearly valued by the manager, but other central midfielders are well-established internationals who will be tricky to usurp.

Ollie Watkins

Watkins is in pole position to play the role of Kane’s deputy at the Euros, with a consistent stream of goals and assists since Unai Emery took over at Aston Villa…

Callum Wilson

…But Wilson is not far behind and when the Newcastle striker stays fit, the goals usually flow.

Mason Mount

his own unconvincing form for new club Manchester United – although injuries have interrupted his season. Needs some goals and assists to earn a recall.

Fikayo Tomori

Southgate criticised the Milan defender last year for making too many mistakes, but Tomori has shown good form in Serie A and earned an autumn recall to the England squad.

James Ward-Prowse

The West Ham midfielder is in form for his club but out of favour for his country, having just missed out on the past two major tournaments and having been excluded from recent squads. There have been calls for him to usurp Henderson in midfield, but Southgate remains as yet unmoved.

Nick Pope

The goalkeeper has lost his place as England’s third-choice keeper and needs a strong season for Newcastle to win back his spot.

Jarrod Bowen

Another West Ham player in form. Bowen has showed bright attacking intent in his five caps to date, but faces stiff competition in the winger roles.

Ivan Toney

The Brentford striker will return from a betting ban in January with five months to prove himself to Southgate. He will need to hit the ground running.

Levi Colwill

The Chelsea defender has established himself in Mauricio Pochettino’s team and has the ability to play both centre-back and left-back. Aged 20, this tournament may come just too soon with more established players ahead in the pecking order.

Curtis Jones

Liverpool’s 22-year-old midfielder had earned a regular place in Jurgen Klopp’s team earlier this season before injury struck. If he can impress regularly at Anfield, he will give Southgate something to consider.

Ben White

The Arsenal defender left the 2022 World Cup for personal reasons and has not returned to the England setup. It is unclear whether White would want to, but continues to perform to a high level for one of the best teams in the Premier League.

Eberechi Eze

The Palace midfielder has a couple of international caps but will need a stellar season to break into the Euros squad.

Morgan Gibbs-White

Gibbs-White worked up through the England age groups but is still to be recognised at senior level. Played a big part in England’s success at the Under-21 Euros in the summer.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Once seen as the natural understudy to Harry Kane, Calvert-Lewin has struggled with form and primarily fitness and has fallen down the pecking order behind Watkins and Wilson.

Ezri Konsa

Konsa is a vital part of an improving Aston Villa team under Unai Emery, but is yet to earn a senior international call-up.

Eddie Nketiah

England Under-21s’ record goalscorer has only made one senior appearance so far and he would need a special season for Arsenal to break into the Euro 2024 squad.
