Why wouldn’t Cristiano Ronaldo swap shirts?! Girona player reveals all

Cristiano Ronaldo is a competitive man and he really doesn’t like losing.

Nevertheless there’s a certain unwritten code when it comes to footballers, that no matter what the score you will swap shirts when asked. This is especially pertinent for someone like Ronaldo, who is one of the most desirable shirts to receive.

Yet, as it turns out, he wasn’t in a particularly swapping mood after Real Madrid’s 2-1 loss to Girona on the weekend.

Girona vice-captain Alex Granell revealed in an interview on Spanish radio that Ronaldo had told him he didn’t want to swap shirts because of how Girona saw out the game.

Valverde: We took a step forward despite draw

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde felt his team took a "step forward", but he lamented their 0-0 draw with Olympiacos in the Champions League.

The LaLiga leaders failed to score in a Champions League group-stage match for the first time since 2012 as they were held in Greece on Tuesday.

Despite the result, Barcelona retained a three-point lead atop Group D after Juventus drew with Sporting CP.

Valverde praised his players for their efforts despite not getting the result they wanted.

"We were lacking a goal. We tried to get closer to their area on the basis of longer possession," he said.

"But they did a great job in defence and tried to hit us on the counter-attack, spurred on by their fans.
"You could see what amazing people there are here. We wanted to secure qualification but we failed.
"It was still a step forward, but not the one we wanted. The players emptied their tanks out there."

The clash marked a return to his former club for Valverde, who coached Olympiacos in two stints in 2008-09 and 2010-12.

Despite being on the opposite side of the fanatical Olympiacos support, Valverde praised the fans.
"The answer to everything is how well our opponents played. They stuck tight together as a unit. We were up against an opponent that did their job well from start to finish," he said.

"I always had this atmosphere in my favour and today it was against me. I know what the Champions League means to these fans because I've experienced it myself many times.

"It may have come as a surprise to people coming from Barcelona, even though everyone knows how intense Greek football support can be. It was extraordinary. Really nice."

Neymar plotting shock Real Madrid move due to PSG discomfort

Unai Emery's tactics and a mammoth contract would mean the end of the Brazilian's adventure in France to join Los Blancos.

Neymar's return to La Liga might happen sooner than expected, but some fans will be disappointed by the team he's set to return to.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Don Balón, Neymar's father has been holding meetings with Florentino Pérez to have his son joining Real Madrid. The Brazilian player, currently the world's most expensive footballer. would be keen on returning to La Liga if things don't improve for him at PSG.

The report states that Unai Emery's tactics at PSG are not satisfying enough for the Brazilian, especially because he hasn't been able to establish himself as the group's leader. Furthermore, his complicated relationship with some members of the squad -namely Edinson Cavani- have him ready to force a move back to Spain, but wearing Real Madrid's jersey.

Even if he has a wonderful relationship with his former team-mates, things between the player, his father, and Barcelona's execs didn't end in the best of terms, ruling out the possibility of a comeback. The option of playing for Real Madrid seduces Neymar, especially if he takes the starring role as Cristiano Ronaldo's replacement.

Both parties have allegedly agreed to wait, as Neymar still wants to give it a try as PSG's star. If the Brazilian sees that winning the UCL and the Ballon D'Or with Les Parisiens is possible, he will not push for an exit. If the team's run this season isn't satisfying enough, then his move to Los Blancos could take place next summer.

Barcelona, Liverpool move in on Arsenal target Thomas Lemar

With the January window on the horizon, there's plenty brewing in the transfer market. All the latest deals and potential deals can be found here.

TOP STORY: Arsenal face stiff competition for Lemar

Arsenal maintains an interest in Thomas Lemar but the Mirror reports that Barcelona and Liverpool will now rival them for the Monaco star.

The Gunners identified the France international as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez in the summer following Manchester City's late push for the Chilean.

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev insists a deal for Lemar to move to the Emirates was "really close" with a £90 million offer tabled. But with the deal falling through ahead of the deadline, the Gunners pulled the plug on Sanchez's proposed move to the Etihad.

Lemar is expected to use the increased interest to command wages of up to £250,000-per-week when he does eventually move -- likely after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Barcelona monitor new deal for Dybala

Paulo Dybala's new contract with Juventus looks close to being finalised, but Barcelona are monitoring the details of the Argentinian's extension, according to Calciomercato.

The No. 10's release clause could be set at a huge €230m, which was a previously unthinkable sum before Paris Saint-Germain grabbed Neymar from the Blaugrana this summer for around £200m.

The former Palermo star's rise has continued for the Old Lady this term, striking 11 times in just 10 Serie A appearances, meaning that fee could become an attractive figure by next year for some of Europe's richest clubs.

A potential linkup with compatriot Lionel Messi has always fuelled speculation of interest from Barca, but the steep price could now dissuade them after forking out £135.5m for Ousmane Dembele last summer.

Juve offered Rafinha

While Barca are looking to boost Ernesto Valverde's squad, others may be moved on with Sport reporting that Juventus have been offered Rafinha.

The Brazilian, who is on the fringe of the first team when fit, has been plagued by injuries recently and has just two years remaining on his contract at the Camp Nou.

It remains to be seen whether the Old Lady will bite and submit an offer for the 24-year-old, possibly in January, with the player aiming to play at the World Cup next summer.

Arsenal prepare summer move for Jorginho

Napoli star Jorginho could be the centre of attention for Arsenal scouts tomorrow in their Champions League game with Manchester City, according to the Sun.

The Brazilian has already played international football for Italy but remains eligible for both countries having not played a competitive match for either. Giampiero Ventura's reluctance to select him for the Azzurri is baffling after Jorginho's excellent performances as the pass master for Maurizio Sarri's side.

The 25-year-old is under contract until 2020, but the Gunners appear to be readying an offer next summer to add a focal point to their midfield.

Barcelona’s improvement under Ernesto Valverde examined

Guillem Balague examines Barcelona’s improvement under new coach Ernesto Valverde.

Back in August, it seemed Barcelona were in for a long season.

Neymar's departure to Paris Saint-Germain had left a cloud over the club and their defeat to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup did not bode well.

Ernesto Valverde had inherited problems on and off the pitch, but fast forward two months and the picture looks very different.

Barcelona's 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao was their ninth in 10 La Liga games. They are eight points clear of Madrid at the top of the table, with 28 goals scored and just three conceded.

Since those Spanish Super Cup defeats in August, Barcelona have won 13 of their 14 games in all competitions, and optimism has returned to Camp Nou.

So what's changed under Valverde? His use of Lionel Messi is the most significant factor.

The Argentine has been given a more central role and it has paid off. Messi has raced ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in the scoring charts, hitting 12 in La Liga and 16 in all competitions.

Guillem Balague's weekly column: Real Madrid's two main problems after slow La Liga start

Guillem Balague brings you his five main talking points from the weekend's La Liga action, plus he answers your questions...

What's up with Real?

Real's 2-1 loss to Girona comes off the back of four victories so it is not a huge crisis. But they lacked the right attitude - you consider the fact Marcelo did not want to play - Toni Kroos and Luka Modric missed lots of passes, there was no movement and they went to sleep after scoring first.

On the other hand, the attitude shown by Girona was fantastic. The atmosphere was great and it was absolutely ridiculous to suggest - as some did before the match - there might have been trouble at the stadium. That kind of talk came from people that didn't understand Catalans or people in Girona.

18-YEAR-OLD FRANCIS UZOHO GETS SUPER EAGLES CALL-UP

Just two weeks after making his La Liga debut, the 18-year-old shot-stopper has been handed an invite to the national team

Deportivo La Coruna’s Francis Uzoho has been handed his first Nigeria call-up ahead of the World Cup 2018 qualifier and worldwide friendly against Algeria and Argentina respectively.

Uzoho made his La Liga debut for the Blues and Whites in a 0-0 draw with Eibar on October 16.
And the 18-year-old has been extended an invite for the Super Eagles’ last Russia 2018 Qualifying match against the Desert Foxes on November 10 and a friendly against Jorge Sampaoli’s star-studded Albiceleste on November 14.

Zidane: “Desire to win the league still alive” despite big upset

Real Madrid isn’t immune to let downs, but Zinedine Zidane says that’s not what happened in Sunday’s historic and politically-highlighted 2-1 loss to Catalan club Girona.

“We have to analyze this game because if we lose it’s for a reason, but it wasn’t due to the attitude,” Zidane said.

[ WATCH: Giovinco’s free kick playoff winner ]

The back-to-back reigning UEFA Champions League winners are now eight points behind Barcelona in a race to defend their La Liga crown, and Zidane says their title dreams remain alive.

The margin for error has almost disappeared, putting added emphasis on Nov. 19’s Madrid Derby and further circling the Dec. 20 El Clasico at the Bernabeu.

If we’ve learned anything about Real Madrid, especially under Zidane, it’s that writing them off is a poor, poor idea. Madrid lost three of five league matches in Nov-Dec 2015, and still finished just a point behind Barca.

So where’s Zidane’s mind now? From RealMadrid.com:

“I’m only worried about the three points and having had the possibility to kill off the match. There was no lack of desire or intensity. We’re going to continue working like this as it’s served us well. It’s not that we don’t work. I’m not worried. In football small details matter. … The league isn’t a chore for us, it’s our day to day. It’s true that we dropped three points and it wasn’t expected. After four wins we didn’t expect this kind of match. The players’ desire to win the league title is still alive.”

It’s certainly not over, especially because Barca’s schedule hasn’t gotten thick yet. The Blaugranas drew 1-1 at Atleti but have yet to face Valencia, Sevilla, Real, or Villarreal. Of the same crew, Real has only met Valencia. So, plenty to play for.

For a team which has proven the potential to go on nearly year-long runs without a loss, Zidane’s mentality will play a big role in sorting this out quickly.

TRUTH IS ELSEWHERE – DENIS THE MENACE

This is a guest post from Davour, who you can follow on Twitter as @Davour10 and who has previously appeared in this space. If you are interested in guest posting, just write something up, and reach out to team@barcelonafootballblog.com.

Not long ago I decided to finally join Twitter. I found myself visiting anyway, and thought I might as well establish a timeline of my own, with selected (primarily) Barça accounts. Limiting the amount and trying to carefully select who to follow enabled me to enjoy a relatively balanced and interesting feed of thoughts and opinions.

Even so, thoughts from the more chaotic parts of the culerverse slip through, via comments and likes and whatnot, and it is fascinating to follow the minds of people so ingrained with hostility and bile, and inability to discuss an issue in a civil manner. The humor is sometimes spot on funny, Twitter’s perhaps greatest appeal. But more it is often crude – bantering derailed into simplistic attacks, bouncing off each other without anyone listening or trying to understand.

My way, or f**k you.

But the perhaps most prominent feature of all I have encountered so far is the iknowbetter. These voices always seem to see the truth that escapes the coach: “if only…so.. Why doesn’t he understand”. It would certainly be interesting to watch a team being coached by the average sum of Barca Twitter’s opinions!

The Czech author Milan Kundera has written a novel called Life is Elsewhere, about a posturing poet with political ambitions. The title came to mind in this context. The Answer is Elsewhere would, I think, be an apt way of naming the predominant attitude of Twitters posturing pundit-wannabes with coaching ambitions. And the answer at the moment, for many, is Denis Suarez; the self-appointed heir to Iniesta himself. But who isn’t playing.

It seems a few promising cameos from earlier in the season have elevated Denis to suddenly become some kind of answer to our woes: to our lack of control and creativity; to Messi’s lack of playmates (well, Paulinho…); of a continuation of “The Barça Way” (he has Xavi’s shirt number, for crissake!), La Masia credentials that he has, if rather thin.

To my mind, Denis is a good player who has potential yet to be fully developed. He has
purpose and alacrity, sprinting around making himself available, even scoring one or two goals from a LW position. Then suddenly, he is gone. He has made way for Gomes, or should play instead of Rakitic, or Luis Suarez, or… Just get him on the pitch, goddamn it!

So, why isn’t he playing? Personally, I don’t think he will ever be consistent enough to command a place in Barça’s first eleven, but then again – I am no coach. Valverde, however, is – and with a few years under his belt at that. And he seems to agree. Denis
seems to be lacking in… substance? There is something flimsy to his game, some lack of proper command and solid end product. But he looks right, and seems to do the right things that a Barça mid should – in contrast to Gomes and Rakitic, say. And there is a
rumoured connecting with Messi (that’s stems from last pre-season, I think).

All in all, opinions might differ, and he should get his chances, but there is little to suggest Denis would make any big waves. Reports have it that Carles Alena outshone him in the copa.

So, why has he suddenly received this status, then? You guessed it. He is not playing, so he is the elsewhere upon which one can project one’s iknowbetter-ideals. He is proof Valverde does not go for youth or La Masia or short, technical players, the Barca way, etc. etc. We win, sure, but something ain’t right!

In a sense, I think he functions as a surrogate for the Coutinho so many hoped for. Or Thiago. Or…

SPURS BOSS POCHETTINO OPTIMISTIC OVER KANE AHEAD OF MADRID CLASH

The Tottenham manager is hopeful of having his star striker available for Wednesday's Champions League match against the defending champions

Mauricio Pochettino is optimistic Harry Kane will be fit enough for Tottenham's Champions League showdown against Real Madrid, but the Spurs manager does not want to take any risks with his star striker.

England international Kane missed Tottenham's 1-0 loss to Premier League rivals Manchester United through injury on Saturday.

The two-time reigning Golden Boot winner was absent due to a minor strain in his left hamstring but Pochettino is hopeful of having Kane available for Wednesday's Group H clash with the Champions League holders at Wembley.

Cristhian Stuani and Portu turned Sunday's clash between Girona and Madrid on its head in five extraordinary minutes, with the hosts completing an unlikely comeback against the reigning European and Spanish champions.

Isco had given Madrid the lead, but Girona overran the midfield areas, and the Catalans eventually found their deserved goals. The hosts could have scored more, and the fans at the Estadi Montilivi enjoyed one of their best ever afternoons.

Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid are still in La Liga title race despite Girona defeat

Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid's La Liga title defence is not over after a shock loss to Girona left them eight points behind Barcelona.

Isco gave Real an early lead on Sunday but Cristhian Stuani equalised for the minnows in the 54th minute and Portu netted a stunning winner four minutes later.

Zidane told Marca: "We lost three points, and we are eight behind, but nothing is going to change. Real can come back, we will have better days and our rivals will drop points."

It was no smash-and-grab raid from Girona, playing in La Liga for the first time in their history.

They hit the post twice in the first half and came closer to a third than Real did to an equaliser, but Zidane refused to be too critical of his side's performance.

"I don't think we played badly," said the Frenchman. "We did not lack intensity, we tried hard, but that's why the defeat bothers me. It's more to do with lack of concentration. Their first goal was from a throw-in and we were not focused."

The result was one of the more surprising in La Liga history - but not for Girona coach Pablo Machin.

He said: "I had the utmost confidence we would win, even at half-time. I thought we were unlucky to be down 1-0. It was normal for us to not lose this game because our football made both goals possible.

"I have just been told that it is 30 years since a promoted team beat Real Madrid. We did it with style."

Girona 2-1 Real Madrid: Stuani and Portu goals sink champions

La Liga newcomers Girona stunned Real Madrid by coming from behind to defeat the European champions 2-1 at the Estadio Montilivi on Sunday afternoon.

Cristhian Stuani and Portu struck quickfire goals in the second half to wipe out Real's first-half lead given to them by Isco, as Girona wrote themselves into history in their first-ever league meeting against the champions.

Girona had twice struck the post in the first half through Portu and Pablo Maffeo as they more than matched their illustrious opponents, with Real limited to half chances for Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Zinedine Zidane's team are now eight points behind Barcelona, as Girona rise to 11th.

Team news

No Bale for Real as Isco started, with Asensio on the bench. Stuani started up top for Girona.
The La Liga debutants took the game to Real early on and were inches away from taking the lead when full-back Maffeo cut inside and sent over an arching shot which came back off Kiko Casilla's post.

Girona were made to rue their bad luck less than a minute later when Benzema broke with the ball and slipped in Ronaldo, whose low strike was only parried by goalkeeper Bono allowing Isco to steal in and prod Real in front before Girona's defence could react.

Barca eye January deal

Barcelona are hopeful of landing Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho in a £130million January deal, reports in Spain have claimed.

Barca failed to wrap up a deal in the summer after Liverpool knocked back all offers, much to the frustration of Coutinho, who was keen to leave Anfield and head to the Nou Camp.

Liverpool’s stance appears to have softened since then with reports claiming they will finally allow the Brazilian to head to Barca, as along as the Catalan giants match their £130million asking price.

That should not be a problem and Coutinho looks set to get his wish of becoming a Barca player in the new year, while Jurgen Klopp will get a huge cash injection to bolster his Reds ranks.

It has been claimed Klopp will receive every penny from the sale of Coutinho to strengthen his squad, with Southampton central defender Virgil van Dijk still said to be top of his wanted list.

Even if Klopp has to pay £70million to land the Dutchman, he will still have plenty left over to sign Coutinho’s replacement, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Julian Draxler said to be his top target.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid team-mates arrive in Girona as Zinedine Zidane insists La Liga clash will go ahead amid political upheaval

Real Madrid arrived at their hotel in Girona on Saturday night ahead of their La Liga clash with the Catalan side, with coach Zinedine Zidane confident the game will not be affected by the country's ongoing political crisis.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Co arrived at their hotel in Catalonia on ahead of their trip to face the newly-promoted Girona on Sunday afternoon.

The region has been at the centre of an unfolding political crisis in the country but Zidane insisted his side will keep sport and politics separate when they prepare for the La Liga meeting.

‘Bale is in good spirits,’ said Zidane. ‘He’s feeling better now that he’s training on the pitch, although he’s not yet rejoined the team. We’ll see how things go next week.’

Zidane also refused to complain about having less recovery time than Tottenham ahead of their meeting. ‘We are used to playing a lot of games close together,' he said.

This is Girona’s first ever top flight meeting with Real Madrid. Manchester City’s parent company, the City Football Group, own a 45 per cent share in the club and they have several players on loan there including Pablo Maffeo who man-marked Leo Messi when Barcelona visited earlier this month.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen's heroics allow Lionel Messi to seal Barcelona win

Barcelona won their ninth Liga game out of 10 by scraping a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in a shaky game in which they were as grateful to Marc-Andre ter Stegen as they were to Lionel Messi.

Messi started and finished the move for the opening goal after somehow hitting the post with a gaping goal in front of him, but Barca could have been a couple of goals down by that point had it not been for the heroics of their German goalkeeper.

Paulinho gave an extra shine to the victory with a tap-in in injury time, but the result was no reflection on how the game played out, as Barca rode their luck throughout.

Positives

Barca again showed their newfound steel under Ernesto Valverde in picking up a win they barely deserved in their second-toughest away trip so far. They have their best points total after 10 games since the 2013-14 season.

In terms of performances, Paulinho is growing with confidence and is developing a good understanding with Messi, while Sergio Busquets, in addition to ter Stegen, gave the type of performance you need when you are up against it at San Mames.

Negatives

Barca fans will not need reminding that the last time they took 28 points from their first 10 games was when Tata Martino was in charge. We all know how that campaign ended, and there is a danger that the team could start to stagnate in a not-too-distant future if they do not improve their overall play and continue to rely on Messi.

Manager rating out of 10

5 -- Ernesto Valverde said he felt strange being in the opposition dugout at his beloved San Mames. His starting lineup was odd in that it contained Andre Gomes, hardly a player you want to call on in such difficult surroundings. The Portugal national gave another shy display, failing to give any support to Busquets. Valverde made only one substitution, swapping Gomes for Nelson Semedo with seven minutes remaining.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 9 -- The German is used to playing a periphery role most weeks but had to take centre stage at San Mames, a ground he has suffered at in the past. He produced a phenomenal display, making four saves, all from the usually deadly Aritz Aduriz.

DF Sergi Roberto, 6 -- Looked more comfortable when he played in his natural position of central midfield after Semedo came on.

DF Gerard Pique, 5 -- Lost several battles and looked off the pace at several stages of the game. After a fourth booking of the season he is one more yellow card away from a suspension.

DF Samuel Umtiti, 8 -- Compensated for Pique's shaky display with a commanding performance, blocking everything that came his way, which was a lot.

DF Jordi Alba, 7 -- Continues to play with far more freedom and confidence going forward than we saw last year and has a particularly good understanding with Messi of late, playing a one-two with the Argentine for the goal. Was slightly suspect at the back, however, playing Aduriz onside in the first half. Fortunately for him the veteran striker failed to beat ter Stegen.

Ander Gillenea/AFP/Getty Images
MF Paulinho, 7 -- Was one of Barca's most active attackers, playing in an advanced role for most of the game and constantly looking to link up with Messi and Luis Suarez. Should have done better when he clanged the crossbar from Messi's layoff but got his goal in the end.

MF Sergio Busquets, 8 -- Was given little support from his fellow midfielders and had to fight against Bilbao's army of forwards on his own, which he was more than able to do.

MF Andre Gomes, 4 -- A surprise choice for such a demanding game and yet again he came up short, leaving Busquets isolated and offering very little going forward either.

MF Ivan Rakitic, 5 -- A near anonymous display from the Croatian, who is having a mediocre campaign. His only notable contribution was a scuffed shot straight at Athletic goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Heynckes hails 'imaginative' James as Bayern beat RB Leipzig again

MUNICH -- Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes hailed the "imaginative" James Rodriguez's goalscoring return from injury as the reigning champions moved top of the Bundesliga for the first time this season with a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man RB Leipzig.

In similar fashion to the dramatic midweek DFB Pokal tie, which Bayern won on penalties after 120 minutes ended 1-1, the East German side again had to contend with a man disadvantage for the vast majority of the game, following captain Will Orban's dismissal on 13 minutes for a foul on Arjen Robben.

The Bavarians soon took advantage of their extra man six minutes later when captain Robben fed the Colombia international who fired a clinical first-time finish past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

"On Tuesday, he was suffering severe back pain and couldn't travel to Leipzig," Heynckes said of James at the postmatch news conference.

"James is more of an attacking midfielder and today he played very well. He had an excellent game, tracking back well for the benefit of the team -- that is exactly what I demand of him.

"He had a lot of touches of the ball and he's an imaginative footballer.

"But I'm a trainer who demands more and we will keep working with him. But that doesn't just apply to him, it applies to the whole team, there's always something to improve."

Top scorer Robert Lewandowski doubled Bayern's lead on 38 minutes, latching onto Javi Martinez's inch-perfect pass to end the game as a contest, before limping off on the stroke of half-time with a hamstring strain.

Heynckes said: "He complained of muscle pain and he asked to go off. I do not think it is a serious injury but it has happened because he has been in permanent action over the last few weeks.

La Liga Week 10 Saturday round-up

Atletico Madrid laboured to another draw but Sevilla bounced back against Leganes in Saturday’s La Liga action for Week 10.

It was business for usual at Mendizorroza, where Valencia held out for a 2-1 victory over Alaves to not only stay second but remain unbeaten.

Simone Zaza’s ninth goal of the season put Valencia ahead, and despite Alexis Ruano equalising against his former club, Rodrigo Moreno cancelled out the defender’s goal with a penalty.

The result leaves Alaves in 19th position and four points adrift of safety, with Gianni De Biasi’s debut win at Levante feeling like a lifetime ago.

Atleti, meanwhile, have won just one of their last seven games after a 1-1 draw with Villarreal.

Angel Correa appeared to have won it for Los Colchoneros with 10 minutes left to play, but Carlos Bacca drew the Yellow Submarine level only a matter of seconds later to extend Javi Calleja’s unbeaten start as Coach in La Liga to four match.

Atleti remain in the top four but have picked up just five victories all season and have failed to score more than once in a match since beating Sevilla 2-0 over a month ago.

Finally, Sevilla ended a run of back-to-back defeats in the League after they beat Leganes 2-1, inflicting the visitors’ heaviest away defeat of the season.

The encounter did not get under way until 22:30 Spanish time due to it being moved back for cooler temperatures.

Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia scored either side of half-time to lift the Andalusians into fifth, despite Alexander Szymanowski pulling one back from the penalty spot.

Copa del Rey round-up: Real Madrid labour to victory at third-tier Fuenlabrada

Real Madrid needed two second-half penalties converted by Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez to open their Copa del Rey campaign with a 2-0 last 32, first leg win at third-tier Fuenlabrada on Thursday.

Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane gave most of his star names the night off with Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, Isco and Sergio Ramos among those not even included in the squad.

However, Real's reserves failed to take their chance to impress in a sluggish first 45 minutes in which only Marcos Llorente's thunderous volley from outside the box tested Jordi Codina.

"I'm happy, we scored two goals and kept a clean sheet," insisted Zidane.

"We had patience. We knew we could find the gap in the second-half and we did."

Shorn of inspiration from open play, the visitors opened the scoring from the penalty spot when Fran Garcia pulled down Achraf Hakimi just after the hour mark and Asensio slotted home.

Codina temporarily kept Fuenlabrada in the tie with two stunning saves to deny Borja Mayoral.

But Real's second arrived 12 minutes from time when another pull from Paco Candela on Theo Hernandez saw him sent-off for a second yellow card and another penalty awarded to the European champions.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane almost joined Leeds United, according to former club scout

Tottenham were considering selling Harry Kane to Leeds United in 2014 but were ultimately persuaded not to by former midfielder, youth coach and manager Tim Sherwood, according to former Spurs scout David Magrone.

Kane is rightly seen as one of the world's best strikers, but before Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino decided to utilise him as his first-choice forward his career was at something of a crossroads. The 24-year-old was loaned to Leyton Orient, Norwich City, Millwall and Leicester City before being thrust into the limelight by Pochettino in 2014, but he failed to make a real name for himself at any of those clubs.

Tottenham will no doubt be glad that they decided against selling Kane, who is the Premier League's top goalscorer the season and a mooted target for Real Madrid, but Magrone, who worked as a European scout for the north London outfit, revealed that the Lilywhites have Sherwood to thank for convincing them to stick with the much admired England international.

"There was serious consideration among the hierarchy at the club to letting him go to Leeds," said Magrone in an interview with Australia's SBS. "He'd been out on loan and had never really set the world on fire.

Well Done Gunners – Raul Sannlehi’s Arrival At Arsenal Will Surely Make Things Better

A Massive Change? – Raul Sanllehi’s Appointment Will Make Arsenal A Better Club

Several reports indicate that Barcelona’s current sporting director Raul Sanllehi could soon be joining Arsenal football club. Sanllehi is currently in the final month of his contract with the Catalan club and has reportedly decided not to extend his contract.
Although the news of Sanllehi’s decision to end his time at Barcelona has been doing the rounds for a while, reports claim that he will soon be taking up his new role as sporting director at the Emirates.
The 48-year-old is expected to replace Dick Law as the director of operations at Arsenal and help Arsene Wenger secure important transfer targets from the market.
Sanllehi is a well-respected individual in Spanish football and is also a good friend of Ivan Gazidis who is Arsenal’s chief executive.
The appointment of Raul Sanllehi as sporting director will be a major step forward for Arsenal as the 48-year-old will bringing plenty of technicalities to the club’s backend. He has brought an immense amount of commercial growth for Barcelona in the past while also helping the Catalan club land some of the biggest players in world football including Neymar Jr from Santos.
Sanllehi is sure to bring the same success that he had brought for Nike in the past where worked as the General Manager as well as head of sales and marketing. Sanllehi is also known to be closely associated with FIFA chief Gianni Infantino.
Arsenal haven’t exactly been doing well in terms commercial revenue in the last couple of years and are lagging behind their rivals. The appointment of Sanllehi will help the club catch up with them due to his experience and contacts in the field.
Sanllehi is also said to be the key figure in Gunners superstar Alexis Sanchez’s transfer to Barcelona from Udinese back in 2011. He was also responsible for convincing Neymar Jr to sign for Barcelona when he personally flew over to Brazil to complete the negotiation.
Raul Sanllehi’s arrival at Arsenal could be coming at the right time as he could possibly convince players like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to remain at the club and show them the vision of success that he has brought about at Barcelona.
Arsenal are currently in a state of chaos, with a lack of major trophies in the last decade. Raul Sanllehi could be the perfect man to help Arsenal find success both on the pitch and commercially.

Paper Round: Manchester United fight Arsenal for Barcelona striker Jose Arnaiz

Manchester United and Arsenal want Jose Arnaiz, Liverpool chase Roma's Emerson Palmieri, Newcastle have a £300m pricetag, and Antonio Conte is angry.

United battle Arsenal for Barcelona striker

Manchester United could go head to head with Arsenal for young Barcelona striker Jose Arnaiz. The 22-year-old made his debut for the club in midweek in a 3-0 win over Murcia, and scored an impressive goal. Arnaiz moved from Valladolid in the summer for £1.5m, but has already been attracting attention from the continent, with Bayern Munich also interested. His release clause is set at 20 million euros, and he could soon be on the move again.
Paper Round's view: United and Arsenal missed out in the summer, and perhaps it shows how poor the scouting network is in the Premier League. United and Arsenal rarely spend under £20m for a player these days, but Barcelona have shown that bargains are to be found abroad. Both will be in the market for strikers following the exit of (probably) Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexis Sanchez, and will not necessarily need a senior striker in their place.

Liverpool target Palmieri

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is looking to solve his defensive woes with the transfer of Emerson Palmieri from Roma. The 23-year-old Brazilian is rated at £22m by the Italian club, and is making his return to first team action after suffering cruciate ligament damage in May. Liverpool have conceded 16 goals in nine league games, and are looking to strengthen in January. Palmieri was a target for Liverpool before his most recent injury.
Paper Round's view: Klopp has had two years with some fairly competent defenders, and has improved none of them so far, so perhaps the most sensible option for Liverpool is to give him fully formed players rather than hoping he develops the ones in his squad. It is, however, questionable as to why they brought in Andrew Robertson if they were not going to give him the chance to settle in defence before adding another full-back.

PCP Partners prepare bid for Newcastle

Newcastle United could become the latest club to come under the control of international owners, as PCP Partners prepare a £300m bid for Newcaste United. It is believed that Amanda Staveley wants to complete the transaction by December in order to give Rafael Benitez the chance to spend in the winter transfer window. Current owner Mike Ashley had valued his club at around £380m previously, suggesting the deal may not be too far off.

Ronaldo Imposter Arrested on Sidelines of Real Madrid vs Getafe

A fake Critsiano Ronaldo was arrested in Real Madrid's game against Getafe on Saturday.
The imposter dressed in a full Real Madrid kit before trying to get onto the pitch to play with his Los Blancos heroes.
Admittedly, most of us would wish we were Cristiano Ronaldo, with his footballing ability, looks and body, as well as the money the four time Ballon d'Or winner possesses.
However, the act of actually dressing as him and trying to be a lookalike, while attempting to get on the pitch in one of his games, would be a step too far for most of us.
It may be the dream of many aspiring young children to be like Ronaldo and even dress up and act like him, however as adults it's something we wouldn't usually do.
Nevertheless, one avid fan took that step in yesterday's game against Getafe and almost managed a game!
The imposter dressed in full Real Madrid kit and tried to get onto the pitch for Los Blancos during their 1-2 against Getafe on Saturday.
Nevertheless the fake Ronaldo only managed to get as far as the sidelines before being stopped by police, arrested and then escorted away, a good attempt but it inevitably ended in failure.
However, the imposter seemed to bring Ronaldo and his side some good luck on the day.

European Paper Talk: Neymar to receive bonus if he wins Ballon d'Or

The summer transfer window may have closed for the majority of clubs across Europe but they are already making moves ahead of January.
Our friends at Football Whispers have scoured media across Europe for the latest news and transfer rumours.

France

Paris Saint-Germain will pay Neymar a bonus of €3m (£2.6m) if he wins the Ballon d'Or.
The Brazilian forward left Barcelona for the French club in the summer and has been in scintillating form for Unai Emery's side, scoring eight goals and notching seven assists in his first nine games. (Le Parisien)

Spain

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl has emerged as a Manchester City transfer target for Pep Guardiola. The 22-year-old, who is also wanted by Barcelona, is considered to be one of the rising stars in European football and Guardiola is keen to bolster his midfield with Fernandinho and Yaya Toure both out of contract in the summer. (AS)

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly has emerged as a Barcelona transfer target. The Senegalese centre-half, who was also linked with Chelsea in the summer, decided to stay with Napoli in order to help them challenge for the Serie A title.
Fast and technically gifted, Barcelona have identified him as a proficient ball-playing defender who could fit in well at the Nou Camp.
But it might take a bid of around £60m to lure the 26-year-old away from Naples. (Mundo Deportivo)
Celta Vigo have entered the race for Barcelona striker and Southampton transfer target Paco Alcacer. The former Valencia frontman has struggled to establish himself in the first-team at the Nou Camp. (Onda Cero)

Harry Kane still not at Gareth Bale's level ahead of Bernabeu trip, says Phil Neville

In the latest Super 6 Class of ’92 diary, Phil Neville discusses Tottenham's trip to Real Madrid on Tuesday night, and grades Salford City's start as a professional outfit.
Spurs face their biggest test in years when heading to Madrid on Tuesday night, and Neville believes it could be an overwhelming experience for a number of Mauricio Pochettino's players when they walk out at the Bernabeu.

The biggest of stages

I don't think it is mission impossible at the Bernabeu but I do think it will give us a barometer of how good this Spurs side are. Are they capable of playing at the top level of European football?
I think when you go there for the first time it does blow you away, when you come up those steps from the dressing room and you see this cauldron you're about to play in. It's also the history of the football club and I think Tottenham will find this fixture really difficult.
We talked a lot recently about Anfield being a good barometer for Manchester United players over the years and I think the Bernabeu and Nou Camp are stadiums and occasions where it really tests you mentally and physically.
Playing at the Bernabeu is a special, special experience. Something that most Tottenham players probably haven't done in their careers and it will be interesting to see how they do, and whether this young side play with the same determination and quality as they do in the Premier League.

Bayern part company with Carlo Ancelotti

Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeness claims that a number of players turned against Carlo Ancelotti in the build-up to the manager's departure from the club.
Carlo Ancelotti left his post as coach of Bayern Munich in the wake of the Bundesliga champions' 3-0 defeat to Paris St Germain in the Champions League.
In an interview with German publication Westfalenpost, Hoeness said that certain dressing-room tensions contributed to the end of Ancelotti's reign at the club.
"There were five players against Ancelotti," he said. "It was impossible to get out of that."
The departure of the 58-year-old Italian, who has also managed Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, PSG and Real Madrid, was announced by the Bavarian club on Thursday afternoon.
He leaves with Bayern third in the Bundesliga table behind Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim after four wins from six games and second behind PSG in Champions League Group B after defeat to the French side in Paris.
Ancelotti had been in charge at Bayern since the summer of 2016.
Assistant coach Willy Sagnol has taken charge of the team, who return to Bundesliga action at Hertha Berlin on Sunday, on an interim basis.
Ancelotti's backroom team of Davide Ancelotti, Giovanni Mauri, Francesco Mauri and Mino Fulco have also left the club.
A statement on the club website said Ancelotti had left after "internal analysis" following the defeat to PSG.
Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "The performance of our team since the start of the season did not meet the expectations we put to them. The game in Paris clearly showed that we had to draw consequences.
"(Bayern sporting director) Hasan Salihamidzic and I had an open and serious discussion with Carlo today and informed him of our decision.
"I would like to thank Carlo for his co-operation and regret this development. Carlo is my friend and will remain (so), but we had to make a professional decision for FC Bayern.
"I now expect the team to have a positive development and absolute performance, so we can reach our goals for this season."

Atletico fall short of ending a seven-year drought against Barcelona

Luis Suarez's 82nd-minute header denied Atletico Madrid a first LaLiga win over Barcelona in seven years.
Barca's perfect start to the league campaign ended with a 1-1 draw in the capital, though they were on course to leave empty-handed when Saul Niguez fired home after 21 minutes.
Atleti have knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League twice in recent years but a success over them in their domestic division has proved elusive since Valentine's Day 2010, and so it proved again as Suarez rose at the back post to head in substitute Sergi Roberto's cross.
The visitors nearly went ahead inside 30 seconds, when Saul made his first key contribution in front of his own goal.
Lionel Messi cut in off the right flank, played a one-two with Suarez and shrugged off Filipe Luis only for Saul to poke the ball behind as Barcelona's key man prepared to pull the trigger.
Atleti woke up and dominated the rest of the first period, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen brilliantly denying Antoine Griezmann on two occasions.
The first was a fine one-handed save at his near post after Andres Iniesta gave the ball and Ter Stegen thwarted Griezmann again, this time with his left leg, after the Frenchman had driven into the box by nutmegging Gerard Pique.
Ter Stegen would be beaten in the 21st minute when Saul unleashed an unstoppable attempt beyond him from 25 yards. The 22-year-old drifted off Ivan Rakitic to collect Yannick Carrasco's pass and fired a right-footed shot that swerved past Ter Stegan and into the net.
Suarez, who had left for international duty having scored just twice, did not initially seem buoyed by his midweek double for Uruguay as he pulled out of a header from a Messi free-kick when unmarked.
This was an Atleti side who had conceded just once in the league since August and their defensive resolve was evident when Stefan Savic blocked a Suarez shot just before the break.
The former Liverpool forward had the best chance of the early second-half exchanges when he breezed beyond Diego Godin and rifled in a try that Jan Oblak was behind.
Home fans inside the Wanda Metropolitano feared the worst when Messi won a free-kick 25 yards out. However, Barcelona's number 10, so often Atleti's nemesis, curled his dead-ball effort onto the outside of the post.
Suarez wanted a set piece inside the box when the ball may have come up and struck Savic's arm, though the referee was disinterested and the replays were inconclusive.
Messi fired just wide as Barcelona's confidence grew and Suarez nearly levelled when free inside the box only for a poor first touch to precede a weak attempt at Oblak.
Yet opportunities continued to come his way and Suarez peeled away from Savic to reach Roberto's cross and nod down past Oblak.
Andre Gomes almost reached Suarez again and the final kick of the game was Messi's free-kick from the edge of the box which Oblak managed to hold on to.
