Record-equalling Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo does not deserve his awards and is not among the best players in history, according to former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid forward Julio Salinas.
Real Madrid star Ronaldo made history Thursday by matching Lionel Messi's record Ballon d'Or haul of five, retaining football's most prestigious individual prize for the second year running.
Ronaldo claimed the Ballon d'Or for the fourth time in five years as the 32-year-old labelled himself the "best player in history".
However, ex-Spain international Salinas dismissed Ronaldo's claims via social media as he talked Barca great Messi.

"Just because you're very good, that doesn't mean you're the best, as you've had the bad luck of coinciding with the great Messi," he wrote on Twitter.

Barcelona news: Lionel Messi’s absence explained by Ivan Rakitic

The Argentine was benched for the third time this season during Barca’s 2-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon.

It was the second successive Champions League match that Messi started as a substitute, but he was given a run out for the final half an hour, just after Paco Alcacer headed the hosts ahead.

Former Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu scored an own goal to complete the victory for Ernesto Valverde’s side.

And they will now progress to the knockout stages as a seeded team after winning their group.

But Messi’s absence in back-to-back games has drawn questions from some groups of supporters.

Messi rests for first hour as Barca beats Sporting in Champions League

BARCELONA, Spain — Ernesto Valverde has worked two wonders in his first season in charge of Barcelona.
Lionel Messi no longer plays every second of every match, and Barcelona has a defense that matches the caliber of its attack.
For a second time, Valverde flouted his predecessors’ policy of playing Messi in practically every match in the Champions League. Barcelona’s star rested for the first hour of its 2-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon in their final group match on Tuesday.
Messi went on in the 62nd minute, just three minutes after Paco Alcacer headed Barcelona in front at Camp Nou. Messi then cued an attack with a through pass for Denis Suarez, whose cross was turned into his own net by Sporting defender Jeremy Mathieu in stoppage time.

Messi recently said that at age 30 he understands that “the season is long and you have to take care of yourself.” He also didn’t start Barcelona’s 0-0 draw at Juventus two weeks ago, and was used as a second-half substitute.
“We always think that Messi can change the match and make us play better,” Valverde said about the improvement in his team after Messi went on. “We know that our attack flows through him, thanks to his finishing touch and his ability to start our attacks. He sees passes nobody else does.”
The Spanish side also confirmed its new-found strength under Valverde of disheartening rivals with an ironclad defense.
Neymar may have taken his irreplaceable verve out of Barcelona’s arsenal when he bolted for Paris-Saint Germain last summer, but Valverde has grasped the opportunity to focus on his team’s defense.

Real deal Ronaldo set for fifth Ballon d'Or

Cristiano Ronaldo looks set to match his great rival Lionel Messi on Thursday by claiming a fifth Ballon d'Or as recognition for leading Real Madrid to a La Liga and Champions League double last season.

Barcelona's 30-year-old Argentinian superstar won the coveted award from 2009 to 2012 and in 2015. Portugal's Ronaldo, who is 32, took the honours in 2008, 2013, 2014 and last year.

The man who came to maturity under the watchful eye of ex-Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson clinched his fourth Ballon d'Or after an unforgettable season, first spearheading Real to the Champions League title before also leading his homeland to Euro 2016 glory in Paris.

The France Football magazine award is decided upon by a journalists ballot (with 173 voting in 2016) with each naming a top five from a list of 30.

British bookmakers have stopped taking bets on Ronaldo, who is a cramped 10-1 on favourite to win, with Messi, trophyless last season, at 6-1.

Behind this pair the bookies round out their own top five with Paris Saint-Germain's gifted Brazilian forward Neymar, the veteran Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and the prolific England centre-forward Harry Kane all at 33-1.
