Zidane: “Desire to win the league still alive” despite big upset

Real Madrid isn’t immune to let downs, but Zinedine Zidane says that’s not what happened in Sunday’s historic and politically-highlighted 2-1 loss to Catalan club Girona.

“We have to analyze this game because if we lose it’s for a reason, but it wasn’t due to the attitude,” Zidane said.

[ WATCH: Giovinco’s free kick playoff winner ]

The back-to-back reigning UEFA Champions League winners are now eight points behind Barcelona in a race to defend their La Liga crown, and Zidane says their title dreams remain alive.

The margin for error has almost disappeared, putting added emphasis on Nov. 19’s Madrid Derby and further circling the Dec. 20 El Clasico at the Bernabeu.

If we’ve learned anything about Real Madrid, especially under Zidane, it’s that writing them off is a poor, poor idea. Madrid lost three of five league matches in Nov-Dec 2015, and still finished just a point behind Barca.

So where’s Zidane’s mind now? From RealMadrid.com:

“I’m only worried about the three points and having had the possibility to kill off the match. There was no lack of desire or intensity. We’re going to continue working like this as it’s served us well. It’s not that we don’t work. I’m not worried. In football small details matter. … The league isn’t a chore for us, it’s our day to day. It’s true that we dropped three points and it wasn’t expected. After four wins we didn’t expect this kind of match. The players’ desire to win the league title is still alive.”

It’s certainly not over, especially because Barca’s schedule hasn’t gotten thick yet. The Blaugranas drew 1-1 at Atleti but have yet to face Valencia, Sevilla, Real, or Villarreal. Of the same crew, Real has only met Valencia. So, plenty to play for.

For a team which has proven the potential to go on nearly year-long runs without a loss, Zidane’s mentality will play a big role in sorting this out quickly.

TRUTH IS ELSEWHERE – DENIS THE MENACE

This is a guest post from Davour, who you can follow on Twitter as @Davour10 and who has previously appeared in this space. If you are interested in guest posting, just write something up, and reach out to team@barcelonafootballblog.com.

Not long ago I decided to finally join Twitter. I found myself visiting anyway, and thought I might as well establish a timeline of my own, with selected (primarily) Barça accounts. Limiting the amount and trying to carefully select who to follow enabled me to enjoy a relatively balanced and interesting feed of thoughts and opinions.

Even so, thoughts from the more chaotic parts of the culerverse slip through, via comments and likes and whatnot, and it is fascinating to follow the minds of people so ingrained with hostility and bile, and inability to discuss an issue in a civil manner. The humor is sometimes spot on funny, Twitter’s perhaps greatest appeal. But more it is often crude – bantering derailed into simplistic attacks, bouncing off each other without anyone listening or trying to understand.

My way, or f**k you.

But the perhaps most prominent feature of all I have encountered so far is the iknowbetter. These voices always seem to see the truth that escapes the coach: “if only…so.. Why doesn’t he understand”. It would certainly be interesting to watch a team being coached by the average sum of Barca Twitter’s opinions!

The Czech author Milan Kundera has written a novel called Life is Elsewhere, about a posturing poet with political ambitions. The title came to mind in this context. The Answer is Elsewhere would, I think, be an apt way of naming the predominant attitude of Twitters posturing pundit-wannabes with coaching ambitions. And the answer at the moment, for many, is Denis Suarez; the self-appointed heir to Iniesta himself. But who isn’t playing.

It seems a few promising cameos from earlier in the season have elevated Denis to suddenly become some kind of answer to our woes: to our lack of control and creativity; to Messi’s lack of playmates (well, Paulinho…); of a continuation of “The Barça Way” (he has Xavi’s shirt number, for crissake!), La Masia credentials that he has, if rather thin.

To my mind, Denis is a good player who has potential yet to be fully developed. He has
purpose and alacrity, sprinting around making himself available, even scoring one or two goals from a LW position. Then suddenly, he is gone. He has made way for Gomes, or should play instead of Rakitic, or Luis Suarez, or… Just get him on the pitch, goddamn it!

So, why isn’t he playing? Personally, I don’t think he will ever be consistent enough to command a place in Barça’s first eleven, but then again – I am no coach. Valverde, however, is – and with a few years under his belt at that. And he seems to agree. Denis
seems to be lacking in… substance? There is something flimsy to his game, some lack of proper command and solid end product. But he looks right, and seems to do the right things that a Barça mid should – in contrast to Gomes and Rakitic, say. And there is a
rumoured connecting with Messi (that’s stems from last pre-season, I think).

All in all, opinions might differ, and he should get his chances, but there is little to suggest Denis would make any big waves. Reports have it that Carles Alena outshone him in the copa.

So, why has he suddenly received this status, then? You guessed it. He is not playing, so he is the elsewhere upon which one can project one’s iknowbetter-ideals. He is proof Valverde does not go for youth or La Masia or short, technical players, the Barca way, etc. etc. We win, sure, but something ain’t right!

In a sense, I think he functions as a surrogate for the Coutinho so many hoped for. Or Thiago. Or…

SPURS BOSS POCHETTINO OPTIMISTIC OVER KANE AHEAD OF MADRID CLASH

The Tottenham manager is hopeful of having his star striker available for Wednesday's Champions League match against the defending champions

Mauricio Pochettino is optimistic Harry Kane will be fit enough for Tottenham's Champions League showdown against Real Madrid, but the Spurs manager does not want to take any risks with his star striker.

England international Kane missed Tottenham's 1-0 loss to Premier League rivals Manchester United through injury on Saturday.

The two-time reigning Golden Boot winner was absent due to a minor strain in his left hamstring but Pochettino is hopeful of having Kane available for Wednesday's Group H clash with the Champions League holders at Wembley.

Cristhian Stuani and Portu turned Sunday's clash between Girona and Madrid on its head in five extraordinary minutes, with the hosts completing an unlikely comeback against the reigning European and Spanish champions.

Isco had given Madrid the lead, but Girona overran the midfield areas, and the Catalans eventually found their deserved goals. The hosts could have scored more, and the fans at the Estadi Montilivi enjoyed one of their best ever afternoons.

Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid are still in La Liga title race despite Girona defeat

Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid's La Liga title defence is not over after a shock loss to Girona left them eight points behind Barcelona.

Isco gave Real an early lead on Sunday but Cristhian Stuani equalised for the minnows in the 54th minute and Portu netted a stunning winner four minutes later.

Zidane told Marca: "We lost three points, and we are eight behind, but nothing is going to change. Real can come back, we will have better days and our rivals will drop points."

It was no smash-and-grab raid from Girona, playing in La Liga for the first time in their history.

They hit the post twice in the first half and came closer to a third than Real did to an equaliser, but Zidane refused to be too critical of his side's performance.

"I don't think we played badly," said the Frenchman. "We did not lack intensity, we tried hard, but that's why the defeat bothers me. It's more to do with lack of concentration. Their first goal was from a throw-in and we were not focused."

The result was one of the more surprising in La Liga history - but not for Girona coach Pablo Machin.

He said: "I had the utmost confidence we would win, even at half-time. I thought we were unlucky to be down 1-0. It was normal for us to not lose this game because our football made both goals possible.

"I have just been told that it is 30 years since a promoted team beat Real Madrid. We did it with style."

Girona 2-1 Real Madrid: Stuani and Portu goals sink champions

La Liga newcomers Girona stunned Real Madrid by coming from behind to defeat the European champions 2-1 at the Estadio Montilivi on Sunday afternoon.

Cristhian Stuani and Portu struck quickfire goals in the second half to wipe out Real's first-half lead given to them by Isco, as Girona wrote themselves into history in their first-ever league meeting against the champions.

Girona had twice struck the post in the first half through Portu and Pablo Maffeo as they more than matched their illustrious opponents, with Real limited to half chances for Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Zinedine Zidane's team are now eight points behind Barcelona, as Girona rise to 11th.

Team news

No Bale for Real as Isco started, with Asensio on the bench. Stuani started up top for Girona.
The La Liga debutants took the game to Real early on and were inches away from taking the lead when full-back Maffeo cut inside and sent over an arching shot which came back off Kiko Casilla's post.

Girona were made to rue their bad luck less than a minute later when Benzema broke with the ball and slipped in Ronaldo, whose low strike was only parried by goalkeeper Bono allowing Isco to steal in and prod Real in front before Girona's defence could react.

Barca eye January deal

Barcelona are hopeful of landing Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho in a £130million January deal, reports in Spain have claimed.

Barca failed to wrap up a deal in the summer after Liverpool knocked back all offers, much to the frustration of Coutinho, who was keen to leave Anfield and head to the Nou Camp.

Liverpool’s stance appears to have softened since then with reports claiming they will finally allow the Brazilian to head to Barca, as along as the Catalan giants match their £130million asking price.

That should not be a problem and Coutinho looks set to get his wish of becoming a Barca player in the new year, while Jurgen Klopp will get a huge cash injection to bolster his Reds ranks.

It has been claimed Klopp will receive every penny from the sale of Coutinho to strengthen his squad, with Southampton central defender Virgil van Dijk still said to be top of his wanted list.

Even if Klopp has to pay £70million to land the Dutchman, he will still have plenty left over to sign Coutinho’s replacement, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Julian Draxler said to be his top target.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid team-mates arrive in Girona as Zinedine Zidane insists La Liga clash will go ahead amid political upheaval

Real Madrid arrived at their hotel in Girona on Saturday night ahead of their La Liga clash with the Catalan side, with coach Zinedine Zidane confident the game will not be affected by the country's ongoing political crisis.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Co arrived at their hotel in Catalonia on ahead of their trip to face the newly-promoted Girona on Sunday afternoon.

The region has been at the centre of an unfolding political crisis in the country but Zidane insisted his side will keep sport and politics separate when they prepare for the La Liga meeting.

‘Bale is in good spirits,’ said Zidane. ‘He’s feeling better now that he’s training on the pitch, although he’s not yet rejoined the team. We’ll see how things go next week.’

Zidane also refused to complain about having less recovery time than Tottenham ahead of their meeting. ‘We are used to playing a lot of games close together,' he said.

This is Girona’s first ever top flight meeting with Real Madrid. Manchester City’s parent company, the City Football Group, own a 45 per cent share in the club and they have several players on loan there including Pablo Maffeo who man-marked Leo Messi when Barcelona visited earlier this month.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen's heroics allow Lionel Messi to seal Barcelona win

Barcelona won their ninth Liga game out of 10 by scraping a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in a shaky game in which they were as grateful to Marc-Andre ter Stegen as they were to Lionel Messi.

Messi started and finished the move for the opening goal after somehow hitting the post with a gaping goal in front of him, but Barca could have been a couple of goals down by that point had it not been for the heroics of their German goalkeeper.

Paulinho gave an extra shine to the victory with a tap-in in injury time, but the result was no reflection on how the game played out, as Barca rode their luck throughout.

Positives

Barca again showed their newfound steel under Ernesto Valverde in picking up a win they barely deserved in their second-toughest away trip so far. They have their best points total after 10 games since the 2013-14 season.

In terms of performances, Paulinho is growing with confidence and is developing a good understanding with Messi, while Sergio Busquets, in addition to ter Stegen, gave the type of performance you need when you are up against it at San Mames.

Negatives

Barca fans will not need reminding that the last time they took 28 points from their first 10 games was when Tata Martino was in charge. We all know how that campaign ended, and there is a danger that the team could start to stagnate in a not-too-distant future if they do not improve their overall play and continue to rely on Messi.

Manager rating out of 10

5 -- Ernesto Valverde said he felt strange being in the opposition dugout at his beloved San Mames. His starting lineup was odd in that it contained Andre Gomes, hardly a player you want to call on in such difficult surroundings. The Portugal national gave another shy display, failing to give any support to Busquets. Valverde made only one substitution, swapping Gomes for Nelson Semedo with seven minutes remaining.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 9 -- The German is used to playing a periphery role most weeks but had to take centre stage at San Mames, a ground he has suffered at in the past. He produced a phenomenal display, making four saves, all from the usually deadly Aritz Aduriz.

DF Sergi Roberto, 6 -- Looked more comfortable when he played in his natural position of central midfield after Semedo came on.

DF Gerard Pique, 5 -- Lost several battles and looked off the pace at several stages of the game. After a fourth booking of the season he is one more yellow card away from a suspension.

DF Samuel Umtiti, 8 -- Compensated for Pique's shaky display with a commanding performance, blocking everything that came his way, which was a lot.

DF Jordi Alba, 7 -- Continues to play with far more freedom and confidence going forward than we saw last year and has a particularly good understanding with Messi of late, playing a one-two with the Argentine for the goal. Was slightly suspect at the back, however, playing Aduriz onside in the first half. Fortunately for him the veteran striker failed to beat ter Stegen.

Ander Gillenea/AFP/Getty Images
MF Paulinho, 7 -- Was one of Barca's most active attackers, playing in an advanced role for most of the game and constantly looking to link up with Messi and Luis Suarez. Should have done better when he clanged the crossbar from Messi's layoff but got his goal in the end.

MF Sergio Busquets, 8 -- Was given little support from his fellow midfielders and had to fight against Bilbao's army of forwards on his own, which he was more than able to do.

MF Andre Gomes, 4 -- A surprise choice for such a demanding game and yet again he came up short, leaving Busquets isolated and offering very little going forward either.

MF Ivan Rakitic, 5 -- A near anonymous display from the Croatian, who is having a mediocre campaign. His only notable contribution was a scuffed shot straight at Athletic goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Heynckes hails 'imaginative' James as Bayern beat RB Leipzig again

MUNICH -- Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes hailed the "imaginative" James Rodriguez's goalscoring return from injury as the reigning champions moved top of the Bundesliga for the first time this season with a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man RB Leipzig.

In similar fashion to the dramatic midweek DFB Pokal tie, which Bayern won on penalties after 120 minutes ended 1-1, the East German side again had to contend with a man disadvantage for the vast majority of the game, following captain Will Orban's dismissal on 13 minutes for a foul on Arjen Robben.

The Bavarians soon took advantage of their extra man six minutes later when captain Robben fed the Colombia international who fired a clinical first-time finish past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

"On Tuesday, he was suffering severe back pain and couldn't travel to Leipzig," Heynckes said of James at the postmatch news conference.

"James is more of an attacking midfielder and today he played very well. He had an excellent game, tracking back well for the benefit of the team -- that is exactly what I demand of him.

"He had a lot of touches of the ball and he's an imaginative footballer.

"But I'm a trainer who demands more and we will keep working with him. But that doesn't just apply to him, it applies to the whole team, there's always something to improve."

Top scorer Robert Lewandowski doubled Bayern's lead on 38 minutes, latching onto Javi Martinez's inch-perfect pass to end the game as a contest, before limping off on the stroke of half-time with a hamstring strain.

Heynckes said: "He complained of muscle pain and he asked to go off. I do not think it is a serious injury but it has happened because he has been in permanent action over the last few weeks.
