Atletico Madrid laboured to another draw but Sevilla bounced back against Leganes in Saturday’s La Liga action for Week 10.
It was business for usual at Mendizorroza, where Valencia held out for a 2-1 victory over Alaves to not only stay second but remain unbeaten.
Simone Zaza’s ninth goal of the season put Valencia ahead, and despite Alexis Ruano equalising against his former club, Rodrigo Moreno cancelled out the defender’s goal with a penalty.
The result leaves Alaves in 19th position and four points adrift of safety, with Gianni De Biasi’s debut win at Levante feeling like a lifetime ago.
Atleti, meanwhile, have won just one of their last seven games after a 1-1 draw with Villarreal.
Angel Correa appeared to have won it for Los Colchoneros with 10 minutes left to play, but Carlos Bacca drew the Yellow Submarine level only a matter of seconds later to extend Javi Calleja’s unbeaten start as Coach in La Liga to four match.
Atleti remain in the top four but have picked up just five victories all season and have failed to score more than once in a match since beating Sevilla 2-0 over a month ago.
Finally, Sevilla ended a run of back-to-back defeats in the League after they beat Leganes 2-1, inflicting the visitors’ heaviest away defeat of the season.
The encounter did not get under way until 22:30 Spanish time due to it being moved back for cooler temperatures.
Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia scored either side of half-time to lift the Andalusians into fifth, despite Alexander Szymanowski pulling one back from the penalty spot.
